What a fabulous costume and expanse of material........guess they must have wider doors down there to up hereWinkWink
Like the Edinburgh Fringe, your Carnival is a great venue for candid street photography and you have made the most of it even with this one shot, Barbara.
Perhaps more to come?

Some weight to carry. Beautiful and striking. I guess to use the flash to freeze the moving subject you've got to get fairly close or have a powerful flash and then it would be better to use a diffuser otherwise you get an artificial studio feel to the shot. I guess a high ISO, fast shutter and wide aperture with a shorter DOF. But a shorter DOF is difficult when you have different dancers at different distnaces from your camera. Unless you deliberately throw other out of focus and concentrate on person only. Wonderful vibrant colours captured here and it's great she is looking straight at you. Nice work Brab. Paul

superb (and colourful...)

I think you have done really well - I quite often use sports mode for things like this, when I know I am going to only get one shot at something that is a bit different. The colors are just wonderful and love the nice crop..Jo

This carnival is a wonderful sight for colour Barbara, smashing capture, it is hard when they are so large these costumes and the constant movements but I think you've done well and the ones that are not so good, take another look and I am sure you will learn what was wrong and what to correct for next time.

Fantastic colours. Sympathy over the blur - I tend to get that with my grandchildren (toddlers) and hate to use flash. But the flash worked well here. I tend to use a very wide aperture and highish iso - but that wouldn't have helped here.

I thought this was going to be a butterfly shot as I read the etitle before looking at the image, Barbara!
Not so far wrong, really. A gorgeous image.

As for the blur - have you tried Al Servo AF or Al Focus AF modes? (Canonspeak, I guess it's the same on Nikon??) Combined with a fast enough shutter speed these should freeze all movements in focus.

Very beautiful costume and such a vibrant colour Barbara and it's a great capture, my 70-200 2.8 Sigma would have worked a treat, a good stand off lens.
