The blue tit is an inhabitant of the whole of Europe, except northern Scandinavia. It remains in the neighbourhood of its nest throughout the winter and is a frequent visitor to bird tables, as we all know, being especially fond of beef fat and peanuts.

In early April pairs of birds may already be seen impatiently flying from place to place in gardens, parks and sun-dappled woods, seeking a suitable nest site. If there is no nesting box or tree cavity in the vicinity they will be content with a crack between the boards of a shed, a hollow tree stump or letter box, where they build the nest of moss, well lined with feathers and fine hairs.

Ten to 16 eggs are incubated for 12 to 14 days by the hen alone.

The young are fed countless small caterpillars and insects by both parents. The young leave the nest after 17 to 20 days, but continue to be fed by the parents for a short while longer.
