I had my first chance today to try out my 400mm lens for the main purpose that I got it for.

Its a very different feeling working with a fixed length lens but I think the results weren't too bad for a first try.

I'd welcome any input from those more skilled in the art of surf shooting as I know there is a lot more to learn yet,

This is a sequence of four shots in the trick.

I was using shutter priority set to 1/1600th sec with f5.6 to 6.3 and ISO 200. Shot off a monopod.

(All are approx 80% of full frame)

(I've spotted one weakness already - the exposure / colour balance changes as the angle of the shot / background changed)

A good sequence. I prefer versions 1 and 2. Not so keen on 3 and 4. Smile

The change in colour balance is inevitable and the angle of light changes.

Sam, thanks for your feedback, yes - the sky was bad, I'm longing for a good sky, strong wind and low tide (so I can get out to sea on my local shingle spit that appears at very low tides).

In the meantime I will continue trying to learn the techniques so that I am ready for the day it happens! Smile

Thanks for confirming I'm on the right track re: settings, I've very little experience of this subject so have had to "suck it and see" and this seemed to work.

I had a look back at the original (this is about 80% of full frame) and there is no sea in sight. I estimate he was 20 - 30 ft up and they were both up to about 40', at times (loonies Smile )
