Bobby Ball at Bolton Pentecostal Church 2002

By philtaylorphoto
n the news today, comedian Bobby Ball 76 dies of Covid 19 in Blackpool. Bobby was one half of duo Cannion and Ball, popular in the 1980s in the UK. The pair of them embraced the Christian faith later in their lives.

He's pictured here on a visit to a Lancashire Pentecostal church in November 2002, where he had been invited to share his faith. I tried to get some sort of telephone interview out of him for the Bolton News. He seemed to resent the media being there, and even though I pointed out that I'm a Christian like himself he didn't, er, want to play Ball. A bit odd, as it would have been a good opportunity for him to share his faith. I suspect he was mistrustful of the press, as the duo had been givern something of a mauling in the red tops.

I managed to get a few frames away with him alongside the pastor giving his trademark thumbs up, and he was off.

If you are wondering about the dodgy image quality, it's off a Canonn D30 (not 30D), it had 3 Megapixels, maxed out at 1600 ASA,and cost over 2,000 at launch. Colour balance and flash exposure were a lottery.

I saw him at a youth event at Alton Towers, some time in the late Nineties, where I was part of the driver/minder contingent for a church youth group. He was enthusiastic, as I recall.

The redtops are often unkind: and they set 'em up so often...

I agree, I sometimes cringe at how stuff gets misused.

It wasn't a Campaigner event at Alton Towers by any chance. I photographed one there around then. Canon EOS 600, Fuji Neopan pushed 2 stops...

Sad but glad that he and Tommy came to faith.

I honestly don't remember, Phil. I know BB appeared in between Christian rock groups, and that it was quite a late night back!
