Bodiam Castle

By derekhansen
With the early morning mists clearing to fine weather we had been experiencing in Kent all week, I was fairly hopeful, driving down to East Sussex yesterday, that conditions would be right for a shot I had pre-visualized with the mist wafting around the castle and the first rays of sun hitting the left side of the battlements.
Things looked promising as I approached the village with lots of mist in evidence. I parked the truck and walked along the public footpath towards the Castle in gathering trepidation as it became increasingly obvious that although everywhere around me seemed shrouded in fog Bodiam bl**dy castle was devoid of the stuff. Still I unpacked my camera and tried a few test shots but they showed little to get excited about and I was feeling quite despondent to be honest.
After a while I started talking with another togger (Chris) who was already shooting when I arrived and with cameras ignored we indulged in some mutual expressions of gloom regarding the very un-atmospheric atmosphere we had both been hoping for. But like the wind. luck can change and the longer we spoke the more it became evident that a change was afoot. The wispy white stuff appeared to be approaching slowly from the fields to the east. 'it might be worth hanging around after all' I thought.
A third togger joined us in the form of Mark and together we merry band started to concentrate on photography as the mist got thicker. We settled down and started shooting.
The thing was that although the sun was getting higher there was still no direct light on the castle, so eventually the clicking stopped and we waited for 'something' to happen. And we waited and waited. Eventually to be rewarded when around 90 minutes later the sun broke through casting a beautiful diiffuse light through the mist and the castle walls started to glow. I new that now was the time and 20 shots later I was done and saying adios to my equally happy new chums.

Although Mark and Chris were not members of EPZ I did my bit and hopefully they may be reading this and looking around the site.

A beautiful image - but a coincidence as I am planning to go there tomorrow. Maybe too late, though, but we'll see!

Thanks everyone and thanks to Pete for the HC.
I had a great time, which made up for the many previous fruitless trips down to Bodiam. I will upload a few more over the next few days.
