Bring it on

By geoffrey baker
A bit too close for comfort, I was kneeling under a tree photographing him and his harem of hinds when unknown to me, one of the hinds wandered past me to my right, the stag came closer and closer and I didn't know whether to stay put or run lol.

I had to zoom right back for this shot and took a few more as he came closer still, then I decided to grab my tripod and walk quickly away towards my friend Paul Rosser who had a longer lens than me and so was further back, I shouted to him,"is it coming, is it coming"? as I had my back to the stag, but luckily he turned and went after the straying hind instead.

Superb shot, your bravery was awarded but I think you retreated at the right moment.

Very nice Framing! The colors and details are impressive. And the eye level shot makes it more interesting.

Above all your narration too as interesting as this pic Smile

Brave shot under the circumstances. Well worth the turmoil though.

I think your frightening moment adds to the shot, just look at his expression, not to mention the antlers, glad he wasn't glaring at me but would have been very happy to take this shot Grin

Not one to stand up to Geoff, he is magnificent and could do you a lot of damage, the tones are excellent and the mist adds that bit of atmosphere. A cracking capture!

Thanks everyone :o)
I had my tripod set up quite low to the side of the tree in full view and I was on my knees, there was no problem at first when the deer were a long way away but he kept getting closer and closer until he was too close for comfort and when he made this stance and we made eye contact I knew it was time to go.

Only a week or two earlier I saw a video of one at the same park chasing a man up one of the trees, the tree I was by didn't have those wooden posts around it so I'd never have been able to have climbed up that one, it was too big and smooth, luckily I managed to escape in time.

It looks as though he means business by the look in his eye! I saw some impressive specimens when I went to see the red deer at Ashton Court Estate in Bristol with epzer Ade Osmant at the end of October. I too saw the video you referred to above, however I could not imagine that happening when the Big O was there. If there'd have been some action my money would not have been on the four hooved antlered one if anything kicked off!WinkGrinTongue

His body language is not good - thankfully he didn't chase you.....
