BST or GMT?

By TrevBatWCC
Whilst uptown shopping it was such a lovely pleasant sunny day, so I sat for a while opposite the Cathedral. Looking up at the time, I became aware that whilst the clock showed it coming up to 2 p.m., the strong sunlight on the sundial showed it coming up to 1 p.m. But being in a fixed position on the side of the Cathedral does make it rather difficult to adjust to British Summer Time!! Anyway, in another couple of weeks, both clocks will be synchronised...⏲

Wakefield Cathedral is about 130'East so solar time there is 6 minutes ahead of GMT (or UCT) so the sundial might not be GMT. Also the sun's zenith moves a bit in time (compared to our fixed time) during the year. All very complex and a nerdy point ........ here in Portugal we are about 30 minutes behind GMT although nominally on it.

This sundial reads out the time. That is some great technology there, as long as the sun's out.

That is seriously clever and weird, Leo. Only works for Northern Hemisphere too. Very clever invention!
