Burgtheater in Vienna

By bliba
The famous Burgtheater in Vienna, with its prestigious building on Vienna's Ringstrasse, is one of the most important sites of German dramatic art in Austria and internationally.

Vienna's Burgtheater is not only the federal theatre of Austria, but is also one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world by international standards and one of Vienna's top 10 sights. Its classical stage and language style was soon considered a model for many other German theatres.

The Burgtheater of Vienna was once called "Theater an der Burg", was founded by Empress Maria Theresa on 14 March 1741 and was named the "German National Theatre" by her son Emperor Joseph II in 1776. From 1794 to 1918, the theatre in a former ballroom next to the Hofburg was known as the "Kaiserlich-königliches Hoftheater nächst der Burg".

Tomorrow I will visit this wonderful building again and watch MARIA STUART /Friedrich Schiller .
A political thriller, a historical exaggeration, a passionate examination of the questions that Schiller was concerned with all his life: What is freedom? How does politics work? And how can theatre immunise us against the deadly virus of power?

TEASER: MARIA STUART

Wow! I wish my German was good enough to follow the teaser, but the emotion needs no translation. An uplifting, inspiring but harrowing experience I am sure. Thanks for the post and text. I will follow tomorrow. Great internal architecture shot as well!

studied Schiller's play for my German A Level, having also seen it on stage in Hamburg in 1961 as part of getting to know German literature at the sharp end...

Some interesting detail in the surrounding boxes as well as the main stage. Above all are the starkness of a near-empty stage and the contrast between the classical theatre architecture and the modern staging.
Splendid work, Ollie, and your final paragraph sums up perfectly the power of classical art and its continuing relevance to the present.

This theater does not look that old, Oliver..what a grand space...looks like a classic "shoebox" opera house. And, I expect seeing it this empty (except now) is pretty rare.

I totally agree with your sentiments.

The boxes mirror the emptiness of the stage, and the view gives a good feeling of the vastness of the auditorium.
