Taken on one of the hottest days of the year. Camera used was a 550D and a Sigma 17-70 lens. This was an "accidental" shot, I had walked past it without seeing it! Please let me have as much feedback as possible. What species is it?

As far as I see it it is a peacock butterfly.

Nice details but a bit over-exposed, at least in my opinion. You could probably try to take that down a notch in a software (I do that all the time Smile)
Lovely capture nonetheless.

I reworked the photo to bring out the image of the butterfly.

It is a Peacock. You are near a stop over exposed so need to darken but it does need to be sharper. The near wing is quite close so I suspect lack of depth of field rather than movement. You needed to focus nearer the head and use a much smaller aperture. F5.6 is too wide for this. But then you will have exposure difficulties although f8 would have corrected the over exposure if on manual.

The trouble is a zoom will not perform well at small apertures. The old close up cleft stick!
