exposure time : 1/60 sec
aperture : F/2.8
photo taken at 16h30
Location : Bangkok, Thailand

Sunday, Bangkok, at the local Tesco Lotus I saw this line-up of red phones and thought "hey, that might make for a good photo".
Sunday, at the same time at the same local Tesco Lotus My daughter Nana saw a line-up of red phones and thought hey, look at all those buttons to push ! Fun ! And I can run through the frame and ruin daddy's shot again ! Mega-Fun !".
A bit later daddy gave his little girl a big kiss though and walked off with a huge smile on his face :o)

A question... I have noticed that some photos lose sharpness, especially near the corners and left/right side. I think this mostly occurs when zoomed out completely (think 28mm, but not sure), which gives already a bit of a wide-angle effect. Is this "wide-angle" the reason for the unsharpness (in this photo it is best seen in the phone left), and is this typical for all cameras or just my, ahum rather small model ? Or is there another reason for this alltogether ? I guess I should know these things, but, well, I don't :o(

A very good shot, one for the alternative family album, it says much more than smiling and gurning down the lens.
For your question - Most lenses loose quality at either end of the zoom-range, but these discrepancies are only noticed if they are actively looked for. You have no need to worry. It says in the info section that you used f2.8 so this would be the greatest factor in any softness. Anything below f5.6 softens the pic. The average photojournalist goes for f8, the sweet spot.

Thank you Mark for the clarification. Apreciate it.

Well firstly, well done on having a camera in your hand while down at the ocal Tesco. I usually have a camera with me but when I'm shopping it's generally in the boot of the car. Anyway great result, great shot. Can't answer your question though I'm afraid. Paul

Marvellous shot .... composition, colour, lighting all work really well together. I can't even see any Nissan or Toyota signs that you could pass some time cloning out.

I did'nt know you had Tesco in Bangkok, so I've learned something new today.

8 May 2006 3:04AM
Great. Really nice composition. May be I would clone out the bottle and "dodge" a little bit the right phone/wall to make it look almost perfectly symetric. I really like it anyway. Alejandro.

I was going to mention the bit on the left about focus, but you did already and it isn't a big deal at all; I am intrigued by the bags of wee hanging from the phones... what are they for? Julia
8 May 2006 3:26AM
LOL Julia... you have me lying on the floor laughing :o)))))))))))

This is how most Thai people consume the drinks (soft drinks, fruit juices, ice-tea, whatever) they buy in the street. The vendors put it in plastic bags like these and people walk around with it, drinking from it with a straw (until they finally forget them after making a phonecall at a public phone ;o)
Sorry about the laughing... it's the wee-bit that did the trick :o)

8 May 2006 4:44AM
Thank you all. Really glad with the positive reactions this gets :o)))))

Paul, my A95 is the kind of camera you can hang from your belt... tiny, so no problem carrying it around (and one of the reasons I doubt about buying something bigger/better... I would probably never carry it with me anymore because of the weight/hassle ;o)

lol Dave, there is still the bottle issue... leave it in or clone it out ;o) Lots of Tesco Lotus supermarkets in Thailand btw, not just in Bangkok.

Alejandro, in this case I don't want to risk ruining it. not sure I can do a good job on either the bottle or the walldodging

This is a classic example of planning the shot in your head and then waiting for the right time. And this was the perfect time! I have an A95 and I noticed the same thing. I'm not sure what that effect is.

Nicely captured & composed on the hoof so to speak...
my eye is drawn to the red/pink of the shoes that go so well with the phones - makes the shot for me (amongst other things)..
8 May 2006 4:27PM
thanks Alan; agree about the pink shoes/red sox; Credit for this goes to the mother ;o)
thanks Mark, Patrick, Annaliese.

And thanks again about the explanation about the blur around the edges... one more question... is it fair to assume that - allthough it aparently is a normal thing in photography - it would rather occur/be more noticeable with my... ahum... slightly cheaper, smaller A95 camera (compared with professional cameras) ???

Koen appreciate your comments saddly time & inclination impair my ability to often reciprocate or in fact to beat you to it! Like your portfolio & your willingness to promote pictures that might otherwise go unnoticed. This is a special shot as it is both spontaneous & well composed. One of those shots which embody that "right moment".

Absolutely beautiful shot Koen. I love it and would love to have taken it. The softness you mention is barely noticeable and does not affect the quality of this shot in the least. As far as I know, lenses tend tend to perform at their worst at the extemes of their aperture rather than their focal lengths, i.e. f2.8 and f22. But hey, it doesn't matter in this shot. John

Hard not to like a pic like this. I notice the pink shoes; mix of curves and straight lines in the phone stands;the small bottle shes probably left on the right phone stand so she can reach the buttons, - lovely.

remember well after having seen this in my viewfinder just after having shot it... went up to Che and said something like Yessss, that's a winner with a pumped fist in the air.
After which Che said something like stop behaving like a 5-year old and go get me a shopping cart
Ahhhh... the poetry of life ;o)
29 May 2006 3:00AM
Thank you for your comment - I am really glad I decided to track down your PF because I saw the girl with the phones over SoupD's shoulder a little while ago and couldn't find my way back to it.

The contrast of the phones against the background, your daughter may have pushed in uninvited but it makes it a winner - well done both of you :o)
