Candid Portrait

By Gary_Mac
This is a candid portrait taken at a garden party using a shallow dof. Only processing is crop and convert to B&W using Elements. The idea was to try and capture the subject in a completely natural expression.

The background is still a bit distracting for me.

TEchnically this has no problems at all, it seems sharp, although it may be a little flat, a touch more contrast wouldn't hurt.

Aesthetically I don't think this works as a candid shot, the crop is too tight, as it is it seems like a portrait shot, for candids to work well it really does help to put a little bit of disyance between you and the subject, give the subject a background to be candid in.

Good points - I agree it's a bit monotone and I hadn't thought about candid vs portrait in that sense before - thanks!
