Carder Bee at rest (Bombus pascuorum)

By Paul_Iddon
Bees cannot fly when the temperature drops to around 50F (10C) and I'm sure that on the morning I took this, the day started warm but quickly fell away as clouds built up. I think this carder bee (Bombus pascuorum) was caught short - the temperature fell quickly and it was starting to struggle. Hopefully when I got too close with the camera lens, my disturbing it set the bee back off to somewhere safer than the exposed leaves of the shrub it was on.

OK... Cards on table, macro insects don't normally do anything for me, but this is superb. Not just the image quality but the angle, the directness, the sense that we are meeting with another species, face to face, that the bee is watching us as we are watching it. And I want to know how it sees the world through those composite eyes. So a GEA for drawing me into the bee's world.

Thank you for the GEA award, I know myself it's a tough job going through so many photos and finding those that hold you long enough to give them.
