Careful on the Descent

By hrsimages
Taken three days ago after a four hour climb on skis to the 2818m summit of the Croda Rossa (or Rote Wand = Red Wall) in the East Tirol mountains which is a popular summer walk from the Staller Sattel, a high mountain pass on the border between Austria and Italy. In the winter, the pass itself is closed on the Italian side but it is possible to drive up on the Austrian side almost to the high point. People climb to this relatively accessible alpine summit for the excellent views all around but particularly of the Dolomite peaks which form a 180 degree panorama from the SE through SW. We had to scramble up the last 80m of a snowy ridge to the summit from where this shot was taken. The distant peaks at the top right of the photo are the Dolomites. I will add a variant to this post which is a three shot panorama to give a better impression of the extent of the Dolomite range.
