Carnival Eyes

By barbarahirst
This will be the last of my carnival pictures
I have loads but they just arent sharp enough Including these 3.How do you take people moving so quickly and at a distance with loads of people in the way?
A big learning experience for me.
V2 ..Dont look if you are at all faint hearted. This chap started years ago just as safety pin man.. He now is beginning to upgrade his piercings.I wanted to ask him if I could take a proper photo ..But I am a wimp!!
Thanks for previous comments and anybody any ideas as to fast taking photos please advise
Enjoy your weekend

V4 has been added to show you his safety pins!!

well captured shots barbara.i think a lens with a faster aperture something like a 2.8 will enable you to use faster shutter speeds creating much sharper shots. atb dave x

I think you have done really well, the colour and quality for the situation are good. I love v3, which I find particularly beautiful, but a cracking set - very well done imo. Linda Wink

The work involved in creating V1 is mindblowing. V3 is just beautiful. I don't even want to think about V2!!!! It must surely take carnival folk a full year by the time the decide what they're going to do and then start the creation process. Your images are a great pleasure to see. Glad someone with the knowledge has been able to supply ideas re shutter speed, etc. I'm useless at the technical stuff!

All great images once more Barbara. I just love the colours in V1, which is my favourite, but V2 fascinates me, its gruesome (the piercings, not the shot)!

Three great shots, Barbara. All unique in their own way. Maybe v.2 spends his spare time as a curtain when not attending carnivals, ? There's enough rings! Wink

V1 and V3 are strikingly beautiful though totally different. Both are certainly sharp enough for viewing at this resolution and size. Perhaps the eyeball in V1 is not absolutely, totally, critically sharp - but bear in mind that it is behind a mask, the eye's owner does not want it to be inspected too closely! Two images to be proud of, Barbara - I'm green with envy.
Your D80 has a continuous-servo AF (auto-focus) function and dynamic-area autofocus available to assist with moving subjects; your handbook will tell you how to find them. You will need to experiment, though; I'm afraid I have never explored their potential on my Nikons.
Perhaps as well not to get too close to the chap in V2 as he could demagnetise all your camera gear with a single glance Smile

Love the details and colours in version 1 Babara - good crop too. Good interesting details in this others.

Wonderful colours and shapes - a living pattern, and that eye looks slightly distrustful. As for V2 perhaps the image isn't quite sharp but the subject looks as if he is - YUK.

Super faces Barbara. The focus will come with a little bit of practice and experimenting. asically for moving objectsset your shutter speed as high as you are able or as your apperture will allow.

v1 is quite wonderful. v3 has tons of possibilities, a closer crop in portrait style just below the blue and from the right in to just beyond her earring would make this a stunner I think.
v2.....why????????????

Something about the eye of the beholder fits here. The odd numbers are truly wonderful, the even ones, well, I am sure his mother thinks he looks well. Scares me though, suppose I should join the society of wimps.

Wow, V1 really does it for me - the colours and composition are fantastic. Having just one eye in the frame really gives it an edge somehow - great!

As for query about getting sharper shots, can I ask, what ISO have you used? I have a D80 and you can get decent shots by bumping it up fairly high. Saying that though, I've only shot with a maximum focal length of 200, not 300 like your pictures, so it's entirely possible I have no clue what I'm talking about!

one other thing you can do is to up your iso and it will give you a faster shutter speed - I dont know overly much about photography but I am learning and will only comment where I feel confident, I love the V1 - V4 gets an OMG all that piercing!!! - a well done tho for you taking the pics
Nothing more I can add, Barbara, V1 is just brilliant.

An interesting and colourful series Barbara and I really like the tight crops of #1 and #3 - some good advice from Bill, your camera needs a little hint that it's meant to cope with moving subjects!

Professional image, well handled with superb colour.

Excellent crop and well spotted.

With experience comes skill, carry on shooting and the threads start to make sense.
Faster shutter speed, higher iso and faster glass.

I work ina press environment and sometimes the moment is there and I am prepared and sometimes not.

You do the best you can, with what you have, in the time allowed.

Very well done.

best regards
