Carols, lights, Santa, mulled wine and dancing in the street

By mrswoolybill
Basically, the title gives a full explanation. On Friday night several hundred people braved the icy cold to launch the Christmas season in our town centre. Wendy Neal, our local Olympic Torch bearer, led the count-down for switching on the lights. I photographed the event for the Town Council.
These are just fun snaps. But the evening was a lot of fun.
Thanks for looking,

Everyone wrapped up well and thoroughly enjoying themselves - v1 is my favourite.

I do wonder how the keyboard player got on with one finger though WinkWink

There's nothing nicer than community spirit. After years of living in London where there was precious little, it's wonderful to be living in a friendly village and to be part of a community. A lovely set of images recording your evening Moira.

There is nothing nicer that watching and capturing people having fun. This set of images does just that, brilliant documentary footage. Image number eight being my particular favourite.

A fine portfolio of excellent examples of photo journalism. I took some photos of our switch-on on Friday but in an unofficial capacity.

What a lovely set! I love seeing people enjoying themselves in group activities. Each image depicts a great moment of joy and lovely expressions. The only one struggling is the man who seems he doesn't know what to do with the keyboard.SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

I pity the poor bloke on the organ. His fingers must have been frozen. I hope it didn't affect his playing. Grin And in a week's time V7 will be me at our annual Nativity. I usually end up on the tea stall but I'm vying for the mulled wine stand this year. Wink

Thanks everyone. This has put me in a festive mood, I have spent the morning baking. Mince pies and sausage rolls are cooling down for the freezer, the cake is in the oven. I am feeling so housewifely and virtuous it positively hurts.
Regarding this set, as some people have noted the accompanist did not look comfortable. It's as well he was drowned out by the singing... Wink

Well yes, Bill would agree wholeheartedly but that won't deter him from wolfing mince pies!
Cheers, everyone.

PS Yes, we do have a strong sense of community, and we are working hard to try to maintain it. It's not easy - we are stuck between a much wealthier neighbour (Hexham) on one side, and much bigger neighbours (Newcastle, the Gateshead Metro Centre) on the other. Plus there's a big new housing estate that has been built without easy pedestrian access to the town centre - it's designed purely as dormitory accommodation for commuters. Events like this work best when they involve the schools, because the children drag their parents along. It's been an excellent year, and we have plans already for big community events next summer.

the one fingered organ player deserves a mention..but I really like V3...the soft light reflection on her heavy lens is quite moving Smile

We had the annual Christmas Stroll in our little town this weekend. Similar activites - happy children - the little girl in v3 pulls at my heart strings with that almost rapt, adoring expression.
