Casino of indolence

By gss
We, Romanian we have a lot of defects, one of the most important is a huge indolence, carelessness, we do not take care of us, our lifes, our past, our heritage. A "great" example is the Constanţa symbol, the former Casino . It is for us not only the main harbor symbol at the Black Sea, but during time, became even our Black Sea symbol, or emblem.
Constanţa , located on Dobruja province, our gate to the Black Sea, is one of our most 5 important towns ( some years ago was the second as population). The Port of Constanța is the largest on the Black Sea and the 18th largest in Europe.
Was built by ancient Greeks, from Miletus, in the VI-V before Christ under the name of Tomis. Conquered by the Romans, became the capital of Scythia Minor Province, under a new name, Constantiana. Here was exiled and died Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) . Was several times destroyed by migrating peoples, rebuilt by Byzantines. Was conquered by Bulgarians, then Byzantines again. During the XIV century became part of Wallachia, then until 1420-1877 was under direct rule of the Ottoman Empire ( named Kustenje). Here was in the middle ages a large Genoese colony (they built a lighthouse, in 1300, today is rebuilt another one). After 1878 became part of the Romanian Kingdom. It was a very multicultural town with minorities of Aromanians, Greeks, Turks, Tatars, Germans, Italians, Bulgarians, etc. Today is a main touristic destination the main gate to the sea resorts on the Black Sea.
On the eastern seafront was built, in 1880, a wooden large building as a theater and a ball ballroom, but in 1898 a large storm destroyed a part. So was built today building by French architect Daniel Renard, between 1909-1910 (and a nearby public Aquarium). The building was designed in French Art Nouveau style, in a short promontory on the seafront, having an exceptional position. Was restored by the same architect in 1937. Then, when communists took the power in 1947, became a big restaurant until 1990. After that, never understood why, gradually fell into ruin.
Today it looks horrible (in my 2006 pictures was not so degraded - the sea climate in winter is very cold and humid, in summer is too dry and hot, winds are strong, so if not used and maintained, degradation went quickly. There were some property issues, every year was announced the good news that "next year" will be restored, but has not happened nothing, so even authorities have again told us that a real restoration will begin next year, I don't believe that (the company in charge, I have had some contacts in the past with them, they never done any restoration, so even they will start, the result will be quite doubtful.
Pictures were taken in November 2006 ( an awful month here) with my compact camera so not great.
For a lot of historical pictures - this blog page offers a lot.

And today 2 shorts videos: the first with the degradations indoor and outdoor, the second taken outside with a drone (aerial)

you have always put architecture as your interest, Silviu..
You have cropped it in slightly different ways.. but it is a journey done by birds..
V1 stands out quietly..
Shows the importance of past..

I have discovered a funny thing: in NORMAL VIEW (not large view), I verified that this 17 pictures have loaded right, and then, after seeing all the set, I slipped the mouse on the 17 buttons to left or right, very quickly: a strange zoom effect appears, worth to try it
( but only after seeing all variants so they are all preloaded in the memory, and only after that, it works) Grin

Excellent series of captures of this fine old building Silviu. It is a shame it is being left to fall into disuse and I hope the authorities keep their promise and carry out the restorations.

An excellent collection, Silviu!
A wonderful building and such a shame it now needs much work to restore it back to its former glory.
One can live in hope!

Brings out sweet memories from the summer of 1977. We stayed ten days in a hotel in Constanta (Köstence in today's Turkish) for honeymoon. This gorgeous construction has always been in my mind. What a pity to learn that it has been left to see its destruction by the elements, especially by the effects of the harsh Black Sea. A great set, Silviu. Thank you for sharing the videos as well.

V1, 13, and 17 are favorites...
The building really catches the eye and I like to see the ocean in the background...
