The castle stands on the small island known in antiquity as Megaris. The Roman patrician, Lucullus, built his magnificent villa on this site.It was during the fourteenth century that the current name (Castel dell'Ovo) came into general use, perhaps on account of its shape, though legend associates the name with Virgil, who is said to have hidden an egg in the castle, to which the castle's fate was linked.
