NOTE: It would appear this is a MALE chaffinch not female. Sorry I don't know that much about birds... hence the descriptive piece below.


One of our commonest birds, the chaffinch is found not only throughout Europe but also in northwestern Africa, the Middle East and Asia as far as western Siberia.

Birds inhabiting northerly regions migrate to the mediterranean in the autumn. Elsewhere they are resident or migrate only locally.

The males stake out their breeding territory in February or March, the females arriving somewhat later to select a nesting site. The nest is a neat, compact cup of moss, lichen and spiders' webs, often camouflaged with bits of bark from the tree in which it is placed. The chaffinch has one brood in April or May and a second in June or July. A clutch usuqally comprises five eggs, incubated for 12 to 14 days by the hen alone. The diet consists mainly of seeds. Outside the breeding season chaffinches form groups that roam the fields with other seed-eating birds or frequent parks and gardens where there are feeding trays or bird tables. They are also plentiful in thin woodlands.
