Chantry Chapel

By TrevBatWCC
Leaving the Hepworth Gallery side of the river, crossing over the busy main road which links that south side of Wakefield to the city centre, I headed to here, the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin.
Its size is just 15 metres by 8 metres and was built in the 14th century when the medieval stone bridge it stands on was completed, and which crosses the river alongside the main road bridge. It is one of only three surviving bridge chapels in England and, with the bridge, is a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade I listed building. The original stonework can be seen at the base, although the upper part, including the west front, was rebuilt in 1847-8. Regular services, though not every Sunday, are held there, and it has open days at public holiday weekends.
V2, V3 & V4 showing the interior were taken several years ago on one of the open days, and with my Sigma 10-20mm lens, at the 10mm end to squeeze in as much as possible in the small space!

Not knowing the significance of bridge chapels, I researched the subject (googled itWink) and found an informative Wiki article on the subject of this very chapel.
