Hi Sherman and welcome to the Critique Gallery! Were here to help you improve your technique, familiarity with the cameras, and give some tips on processing.

This is a good shot of the lanterns. You used P mode on the camera, so its made all the decisions. You are also quite close, both actually and zoomed, so you have excluded the environment. (The people, the place, etc.)

Bright subjects against a dark background are quite a challenge for the camera too as left to make it owns decisions, you will get a generally underexposed image.

Some details about this shot would be useful for us to know: did you use and in-camera special filters or effects, and did you perform much, if any post processing on the image? if you have an original JPEG before you processed it, it would be great if you also uploaded it here, - just click modification, then select Upload, then select your un-edited image.

Its appears very high contrast, a little over-saturated, and slightly underexposed. Its fine like that, and there are alternatives to a shot like this, one is to be further back to include the environment, so people who have never been there get a sense of the place and the celebrations.

I have loaded a mod, which is a little brighter, less contrast, less saturation to compare with. Its doesnt work well as theres no detail at all in the dark areas of your image that can be revealed, but even so there are some small details that are more visible.

I will check back later to see if you have an un-edited original.

Regards

Hello, Sherman, it's good to see you in the Critique Gallery.
I wonder what it was in particular about this image that prompted you to request critique.

The colourful lanterns are quite striking, and all the more for being set against a dark background, with few distractions. You might like to consider removing some of the intrusions on the frame edges, as I have done in my modification, for a cleaner and distraction-free presentation.
I also cropped left, top and right to contain the lanterns with the same amount of space around them, and added a touch of Clarity.
Otherwise, I think this is very effective.

Since there is very little in the background to give context, I tried a different presentation, removing the background altogether and filling the frame with the colourful lanterns. Rather abstract, but eye-catching. This is my second modification.

And welcome from me, too.

I'd really like to see a completely unedited version of this shot - from the look of it, you may have done a good deal of processing, or have used an in-camera effect. The colours are harsh, the contrast is high... Everythign looks quite gaudy.

You can upload your own modification, so we can see an unprocessed version, and maybe work on it a bit...

Program mode is useful for people who don't want to be bothered with anythign technical - those who only want a snapshot. For more creative work, Aperture (or possibly Shutter) priority gives more control - though you need to understand what you can change, and how to od it, of course. But that's what we're here for.
