Clarence Dock

By Philo
A view from the bridge over Clarence Dock just after sunset. I wanted to be out earlier but as usual it was chucking it down and was in fact still raining when I took this. The very bright building in the distance is our office, Livingstone House.
Feedback required on any aspect of the image but in particular the following:
Dynamic range is quite high so is I have struggled to get the balance right? I have lifted shadows using the shadows / highlights tool.
White balance - I usually choose Tungsten for night shots but it seemed a bit too blue so this is set manually using the eye dropper in ACR
Composition - I have cropped the bottom to place the handrails in the corners and then trimmed a little from each side to remove intrusions
I will upload another later from closer to the water with much more reflections.
Looking forward to your comments.
Phil

Super shot Phil, mind you I would tend to look into some energy savings in your building - what with all those light on!

This is a great location, love the reflections, lights, architecture - have uploaded a mod as there are a couple of things I may have done differently...however that is just my opinion though, and by no means right Smile

Didn't add in the description for the mod that I also just cloned out the little bit of debris in the water, and also the feint white cloud above the large building on the left.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks guys, really appreciate the positive comments. Grin

Nice mod, Chris, it makes for a very different image, but works well. The 2 bits you cloned out are worth doing also.

Cheers,

Hi Phil, and Happy new year.

The master of the verticals!

Questions and answers in order: Dynamic range, - I believe your lost actual black by lifting just a little too much.

White balance: still too blue, and the blue channel is over saturated.

Composition: I like the rails at the corners; it has not particualr point of focus, so dont see the point in varying from the symmetry you have.

So Ive uploaded a mod with all of the above addressed. And sharpened a teeny bit. Its also a very good shot. I guess the lights are on in your building because you were late taking this shot! May high rise buildings here maintain light on
to try to miminise the number of migratory bird deaths that occur from crashing into unlit windows in the dark.

Regards

Happy New Year, Willie!

Thanks as always for the detailed critique and of course the mod.
I must remember to check the blacks after lifting shadows
I reckon I should have left white balance as shot.

Lights still on in the building quite simply because it was still full of workers but interesting point about the birds.

I think I may take on board all the comments and repost in the main gallery.
