Really nice shot, I especially like the expressions on the faces in the background - intently concentrating. You've captured the atmosphere really well.

Thanks for the comments.

First time out of Europe Ron, but always wanted to go to Japan and timing worked out well for Sumo. An event I have wanted to see live since Channel 4 first broadcast it in the UK 15+ years ago.

Fantastic Neil, from your last two images I really want to visit Japan, I heard it's rather expensive though? Not going there but actually doing anything.

Brilliant composition. I really like the referree (I am assuming that is his role) standing in the middle. Great colours and a real sense of struggle between the two sumos.

Not someone to be met down a dark alley - the guy in the background I mean!!!!

Thanks for your comments guys.

Keith, he is an ex wrestler, but sadly I cannot remember his name. One of the highlights for me was that earlier in the day the judge in that spot was Chiyonofuji (The Wolf). Anyone who used to watch Sumo on Channel4 is sure to remember that name.

Thanks

I remember who you are on about from my days of watching the wrestling, the day I realised it was all made up was the day I stopped watching it. Think his name went like Youkozuma or something like that.

Everyone says so (including the Japanese), but so far it has not seemed any more expensive than western Europe for Hotels, travel, food etc, And some things like entry to temples, metro travel, taxis are cheaper.

The bullet train to Kyoto was expensive at over 115 each, but no worse than a long distance train journey in the UK and this is a train service with an annual arrival time deviation of only 36 seconds!

All in all there are cheaper places to go, but it is fine.

You sure you are not getting it mixed up with WWF?! Sad

If it was all made up the 2 current grand champions (Yokozuna - his name was Chiyonofuji and he was one of the most successful Yokozuna of all time despite being one of the lightest) would almost certainly be Japanese not Mongolian, and one would not currently be under a very dark cloud due to match fixing allegations.

Maybe I have an illusion that needs to be shattered, but I have watched a lot of Sumo and never considered it was made up.

I will be very disappointed if it is.
