'Climb to Goathland'

By limmy62
This image is extremely deceptive in that the angle from which it was taken belies the fact that it has already undertaken a climb on a gradient of around 1 in 90......very steep!!
As it passed it was only to be able to attain a speed of around 10mph, and it is testimony to the people that cosset and maintain this traction, that it is able to undertake this work at all.
In its steam heyday, such locomotives would not normally be allocated to areas with this kind of terrain, and in instances where they were used in an emergency, they would not be
hauling the number of coaches that this can be seen working with in this image.

Apparently the black smoke is due to the fact that coal has just been put in.
A super image and I have one from exactly the same spot.

It's a good spot, with a bend, a viaduct, a hill and a bridge - perfect location for this kind of shot. Well chosen, and well taken.
