Coastal Composition

By NDODS
Good day to you all near and far

Thank you for all your comments, critiques and votes following yesterdays upload of Leeds Castle. A further mention going to Jamesmoorephotography (James) for his User Award.

Today's upload is from my archives, it was captured a little while ago now whilst spending a rather cold and damp day at Dungeness. I agree it is quite minimalistic, however I would like some feedback as to its composition and appeal.

I hope that you all have a wonderful day ahead.

Regards as always NathanGrinGrinGrin

It certainly appeals to me. The colours and textures are great. Wouldn't fancy a dip mind you....looks freezing.

Very appeasing. Calm waters below very moody skies! Would quite like to see this in landscape format Nathan. Smile

The vertical layers of tones and textures work very well Nathan.

This is really good, it is so simple but its composition is fantastic.

I love the feel of the way it creates the layers of the earth.

Would be interested to see how this would be in mono ?

Minimal with great impact.. The contrasting layers work very well here.., with the addition of texturing in the f/g...

I feel its certainly got a lot of depth to it as it draws you in to the horizon and the colours blend perfectly for me.Smile

Even though the sea is the narrowest of the three bands, the sense of distance to the horizon is still there

Works well for me

The banding works beautifully Nathan , the fact you chose " up an doon" format accentuates the bands which is marvelous and the added texture finishes this off beautifully. SmileSmileSmile

I think it is just great! I love the layers of sky, beach etc; the sense of peace it portrays is just wonderful. For me, a super picture.Grin
OK,the three bands are OK as too composition, but the clouds really make it. I dont think it wouldnt work mono any better. A good capture anyway! ---- The very best regards from Finland ! - Jukka.

I think Lynne has summed things up very well, Nathan!
You're certainly drawn into the picture.
I wonder what a square/squarish crop would do for the image - just a thought!

I like this one Nathan, the layers are quite appealing and wouldn't look out of place in an up market gallery. However regarding the composition the dark collection of pebbles ( top r/h side of beach) could do with cloning out or cropping but i like the dog dodo in centre fg as this helps the viewers eyes around the image.

it says it all.

I like the simplicity of this image, the portrait format working to the advantage of the scene.

I do however, find the almost identical amount of foreground and sky not quite right.
I would crop out some of the fg, giving the three very distinctive sections a different amount of space each. I think that would give a better overall sense of vertical balance.

Wonderful layers of colour and interest.
The potential crops are endless and it makes me want to rush out with my camera.
Hi Nathan, I love this but would have to disagree with "quite minimal", there's plenty of shades, textures and lines. The narrow band of water divides the wider bands of cloud a beach very well and gives balance. Most people would do this as a landscape but for me the portrait format makes it deeper and stronger. Best of light, Si.
a great impactive image, very well done.

Ive looked at this for a while Nathan, trying to pu it into the context I have to assume it was meant at the time of shooting. So I can be way off.

Ive read all the comments, and its certainly had an impression on all, - which is good.

I read the composition suggestions, and your question.

So, to properly assess this shot I downloaded it.

A couple of things I notice.

The image is not level, using the apparent far side of the water as a guide, it needs about 0.4 degrees CW rotation.

The central band is not central, - its lower than the exact centre, i.e theres more sjy than beach. I think this is important when dealing with bands like this, unless you crop. So a little off the sky lifts the centre, into the centre, and then looks balanced, and not top heavy.

However, when I look at it and think, - whats the important part of the shot, I think, its the clouds. So if I crop a lot off the bottom, leaving the edge of the beach on a third, - magic!. It works great, at least for me. So either the thirds, or get the middle in the middle with the rotation.

Sharpen the water only, - its very soft.

Hope this helps,

Rules in photography and art are made to be broken, it`s a lot like choosing hifi " if it sounds good it is good". This makes you look and walks your eye to the waters edge and I like it!
