Coke being pushed from an oven

By paulbroad
This is how close I could get visitors to a coke oven push. They could both hear the noise, smell the smells and feel the heat. I regularly took a military visit round the works. On one occasion I had a couple of soldiers who had been in Afghanistan very nervous and ready to run! I had to reassure them that they were safe.

I thought that I might have run in Afghanistan!

Used to work at the Redcar Coke ovens. they are not pleasant places to work. Miss the crack from the lad's though.

I visited Redcar ovens a number of times. The same basic design as Dawes Lane where this was shot. Dawes Lane now also regrettably closed - largely due to a series of poor management decisions in my opinion but that's another matter.

A great pity for both plants. Coke is becoming a scarce world resource - Scunthorpe now buying in a lot of it's coke. Foresight would have protected the plants and provided the investment to rebuild. We now suffer the consequences.

I had 30 years on coke ovens.

Much more photogenic than petroleum cokers which always seem to be surrounded by nasty, gritty black dust.
