Commuter Love

anyone reading this thread..

Will appreciate this hopefully.

the premis being that people upload the shots they think will do best on here over the shots they actually prefer.

Well in a way I like both of these shots I'm about to post, but Ive never done the camera in car thing properly before.

it came to me as I was stood looking at Kettlewell in the dark - Paul Sutton did this ages ago, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Fought with the tripod for a while till I got a 1/2 decent view, then set off

Cable release was on my lap, so when I saw traffic approaching I hit the shutter.

This one's 30 seconds, F18 ISO... err... 400 I thiunk.

It's in Bradford on the ring road not far from Morrison's. It's got the best outdoor lights as well as the instruments in the car being in focus, so thought it was worth a post.

the on about to go in the versions gallery is the one I think would do better on EPZ

I say, love the colours and the light is fantastic. I'm on about the first one by the way. Second one is nice as well mind you.

The second one would look more appealing perhaps as a thumb which is why it might get more views.

Regarding version 1, I would like to see the camera aimed more at the road with the sat nav thing turned off - it's a little distracting.

Incredible colours, futuristic lights. The second one is well behaved picture.

I've got quite a few with "more road", I had the camera in 3 positions in total, but this one with the well placed steering wheel was by far the most pleasing.

Where/how was the camera mounted Ade?

I remember Pauls version too.

I like V1 because its a difficult shot done well, - and something different.

Great shot. I disagree about the sat-nav though. It is part of the commuter story so adds to the composition in my opinion.

I like V1 a lot. Being hyper critical, as this is what I think you may want:

- It would be nice to have the satnav not blown out
- There are 3 pointers on the rev counter
- The blue rectangle in the windscreen, just above the satnav, may be better if it were cloned out.

Love the composition, and it is a eye-catching shot. Especially like the light trails in the door mirror.

the sat nav steered me around some horrible traffic jams in Bradford too

these new Tom Tom's with the traffic receivers are fantastic bits of kit Smile

I really like its reflection i the windscreen, something you don't really see that much when driving

Williw - the tripod was straddling the passenger seat, the camera on the tripod very close to my head. AF on, manual exposure, then just hit the shutter occasionally with the cable release

Methinks you have made your point with this one, sorry two Ade.
Both are great by the way, V1 is the better of the 2 though.

Don't like either Tongue

Just kiddin, V1 gets it for me as I know how difficult this is to set up successfully ... mounting the trip is a bit hit & miss to say the least.

Cheers for t'namecheck Wink

I prefer 1, but then I was always a bit odd Wink

Radio 4 though?! Just doesn't quite tie in with all the bright lights and action Wink

version 1 is a good example of something i have seen done a lot of times over 30 years, possibly more colour than most, the red and blue adding much to the effect and the composition being better for the camera position being nearer centre than the usual hard to the left angle,
Not being too sharp within the car also works for me, i would even like to see a little more movement and brightness on the hand.
the radio 4 being lit up is good, poss an in joke, i dont know for sure.
The whole picture works well but is not quite as experimental as some and therefore i would expect this to do quite well, RC min.

upload 2.
nice tones, i like the colour in this, Wink (sort of thing.)

im starting to like this. LOL

This is a well executed image and I also appreciate all the info that you supplied with the upload. This is an area that many people who upload to epz fail to take advantage off.

I thought I would have a bit of fun and upload a mod which just toned down the slightly distracting sat-nav and changed the colour of the radio screen. A lot of variations can be changed with a hue/sat adjustment layer.

V1 much more interesting - everybody does boring old snow scenes!
Glad to see you're a Radio 4 listener.

V1 is fab, love the view in the wingmirror.....The fire on the road colours reminded me of the back to the future films....

V2 for me Ade, although I find the rev counter intriquing in three positions of a 30 sec exposure and dwelt on it a while and came to the conclusion that it's at idle then a few gear changes have occurred.

Excellent photo and better than many of this type, although I think the satnav should have been removed.

I really liked this right until the moment I spotted you were tuned to Radio 4. Sad

Good set of light trails and I like the 3 position rev counter.

I do like this, if you take into consideration the work involved in setting up the shot it makes one appreciate the end product. Also though you say it all been done before (as have most photos) I would still call this pushing the boundaries, this is a good thing as we would not get anywhere else.
I must admit that I do not quite understand even with the explanation at the beginning as to why you uploaded this lovely shot with it. But that could just be me not as involved with EPZ politics as perhaps I should be, or I could just be stupid. Ha Ha.

wow

cheers everyone

so do I take it the car shot is more interesting than the river Ure?

it's one of those shots you should try next time you return from a shoot on yoiur own. can't do it with others in the car as they've nowhere to go!
3 Dec 2008 1:21PM
Not everyone would have got the pun regarding the Ure shot I wouldn't imagine. Maybe they should have been two separate uploads. They are both worth it!!!!

I have tried this many times too, you cant have a 'not blown out' sat nav with a long exposure and I love the three needles too and I would never clone anything out of a long exposure shot because each little nuance has its own right to be there....my shots had too much light from the outside coming in to make it successful, will try again later though esp. as Paul sent me his article about how to do this better...Smile ...anyway back to the point seeing this next to the landscape makes me want to say yeugh to the landscape
