Cooling Castle 'n' Cart

By NDODS
An image which I captured a little while ago, and one which can be found on my website.

Cooling Castle was built in the 1380s by John Cobham on the edge of marshes at Cooling, six miles north of Rochester, Kent. It is now about two miles inland. It was besieged by Thomas Wyatt the younger during Wyatt's rebellion in 1554; Lord Cobham surrendered after a brief resistance. Though he claimed to have surrendered to superior force, he had previously sympathized with Wyatt's cause, and he was briefly imprisoned for his role in the affair. The castle has also been the property of the Lollard leader John Oldcastle executed for his beliefs, and later the source for Shakespeare's Falstaff through his marriage to Joan Oldcastell, 4th Baroness Cobham.

During the 1990s, the property was owned by the Rochester bridge wardens. The more recent residential parts of the castle are still in use as of 2006 it is owned by musician Jools Holland. The main part of the castle is in ruins with a private house inside. The gatehouse is in good condition and can be seen from the road.

The castle was put on the English Heritage "Heritage at Risk" register in 2009

Thanks for the brilliant write up, the name rang a bell and then when you said it was currently owned by Jools Holland I knew why. A magic composition, everything is in context and very sharp to boot.

The cart's a bit of a MOT failure methinks Grin Strong composition and colours, Nathan. Lots of shapes, shadows and textures sandwiched between a vibrant blue and green.

Cheery bright day and beautiful not very common rock texture. Before I read your so interesting framework about this image, my instant thought was this may have been the cart used to collect bodies during the black plague. A dark thought I admit but images like this are thought provoking. Light or dark, this is still a delight to see. TG

Yes, Nathan, I spent too much time on your website but enjoyed every minute and all the insight about your new location. Surprising all the super bird images you managed. "So Bert, how's that leg of yours lately?"...made me laugh out loud. Hope they put the airport in a less sensitive place. TG
