Coptic Church, Johnson Fold

By philtaylorphoto
8 December 2018. Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom. Since December 2017, a group of Coptic Christians have been worhipping in the Roman Catholic Church of St James the Great on the Johnson Fold Estate. The denomination dates back to AD 42, and was established by the apostle Mark. Members of the church come from Egypt, Sudan and other Middle Eastern countries. They are a mixture of people who came here to work many years ago, stodents, and a large number who have come here as asylum seekers and refugees with the assistance of the UN.Many have come recently following the persecution of Christians, following unrest in the Arab World The service is very heavy on ritual and symbolism, with incense and elaborate costumes. The Mass was led today by Bishop Misael, who had travelled from Birmingham. After the 3 1/2 hour service the congregation settled down to a fellowship meal (vegetarian, as they fast from meat for 43 days during Nativity)

I deliberated about adding a dark vignette, but the rest of the job had already been overworked.

My Christians from countries where they face persecution is getting underway- later next month I'm visiting an existing British church that hosts two congregations from opposite sides of the same African country who don't speak the same language.
