Coronavirus Ghost Town

By philtaylorphoto
21 March 2020. Bolton town centre, Lancashire. On the previous night, a few hardy revellers made their way into town to sink their last pints before the closure of all leisure venues was applied to to Covid 19/ Coronavirus. Tonight the bars and clubs were shuttered, only takeaways open, and they were doing very little business. Few people were to be seen, those moving about seemed to be just there to collect takeaway food. Pictured, two men wearing through the deserted streets with a bag of takeaway food, despite wearing surgical face masks thyey are close to each other.

On assignment for the Bolton News. The original was shot in colour, but we are considering running a before lockdown page in colour, and facing it a mono page of misery.

Thank You.

Normally that would be just camera club exhibition fodder.

In these times of blacked out buildings, face masks and takeaway food only it has a powerful context

Hope you didn't get too close !
I like this in mono, I think it really adds to the atmosphere..(.or lack of Sad )
Perhaps needs the verticals just straightening a touch but a good one for your assignment.

It's one of 45 shots that went in both colour and mono. I looked at the verticals, and had a ponder. Straightening stuff up reduces the image, and nowadays pages rely on templates, so there needs to be plenty to be flexible.

I'm very careful about the assignments I cover at the moment. 16 to 35 might not be the safest lens to use, but most stuff was empty townscapes. Yesterday it was empty cinema car parks, but I took care not to touch handrails on stairs etc.

Just when you think you can relax, we have a 7 year old murdered Inna park, so this is off the front page.

It's strange, this is the most voted for picture I have ever had. It's made nothing with the nationals. It's strange that news rarely gets votes.

The weekend ends with blurry pics of CSI at a horrific, senseless murder. Blurry images from a cheap lens in the grab bag, that made 4 nationals in 30 minutes.

Funny old world.
