Couldn't resist it

By rhion
Most guillemots don't have this white feathering ("bridled") but it is much more common as you gp further north in Britain.

This one is on Staple Island and is an oddity, not so much because it is bridled but because I tend to like wildlife pictures to be more in context rather than close-ups like this (it could almost be a stuffed one couldn't it!).

However, it's such a beautiful bird with this delicate marking, I just couldn't resist itSmile

As a matter of interest, guillemots are remarkable swimmers and, unbelievably, can dive as deep as 300 feet.

Thanks for looking.

Designer specs for guillemots! The light on it's head is beautiful and really shows off that lovely smokey chocolate brown colour of the feathers.

It does not look in any way stuffed!

Nice shot. Good detail in the subject and like the background. Maybe a catchlight in the eye would improve, but eh you can't have everything. Well taken.

Now there's a surprise - so many kind comments. MANY thanks to you all, I appreciated each one.

Mike (mikeyjuggler) and Julian (joolsb) - for jokes as bad as that you should be up against the beak for making a spectacle of yourselves....

Derek (DerekL) - Funnily enough I cloned out the small catchlight as I felt the blackness of the eye spoke to me more but, as ever, there is always more than one way of looking at a picture - thanks for the suggestion.

Bev (geranium) - Well he had just eaten a big plate of sandeelSmile

Bit of a battle for the "honour" of being number thirty here (records show it was Helen).
Either way, many thanks to you both for having a look and being so generous in your comments, as ever I like reading them all.
To be honest, on Staple and Inner Farne, it's not difficult getting shots like this, the birds are all around you and almsot "tame" in that they are so used to the tourist hordes!

I seem to recall the expression "free-ow" from somewhere and it seem fitting here BevSmile
That is some mod - always pleased when people mod my pictures and this is sooo different.
The effect does highlight the shape of the guillemot's head and I like the result on the bright areas and border too!
Bored at work? Surely not Bev...
Thanks again,
