Curious lizard

By fotobee
Tulbagh South Africa

We were sitting very quietly on the verandah having our sundowners, when I noticed one of our two resident lizards (Cape skink, Mabuya capensis) crawling slowly towards us. By gently moving my big toe, I enticed it forward. Apart from a cursory glance now and again at my foot, I soon saw that it had fixed his attention on my face, and particularly my eye, which was unusual. It was totally unafraid, and came slowly forward. The intelligence visible there was quite remarkable, and he and I gave each other a thorough once over, as equals. I immediately thought that this animal was millions of years older than us, coming from the age of dinosaurs and older. It`s thought processes were quite alien and unknown, but ran back ages before man. He had more right to be there, but I was bigger, cruder and more savage, and could kill him and his kind without a thought, by altering the environment, pouring concrete down his hole, or laying poison down. It was a sobering moment...........

Thank you for looking at, your votes and the many kind comments I had on the purple flower. . they were all greatly appreciated. Just to end this story on the weather. In all my years of gliding, flying and bluewater sailing, I have never seen anything like this. It was similar to a "White squall" , which was an equally feared and destructive force for mariners, and has led to the loss of many boats and ocean liners, which have been lost without trace at sea. In Aviation, it is an equally feared event, leading to the loss of many, many lives. A warning, of sorts, is given to passenger planes by Doppler Radar, and, if the phenomenon is suspected, an immediate :Go around" is given to the plane.

Thank you all for looking, and have a nice day

Best regards
Martin
