DAM BUSTERS

By Tish1
Howden Reservoir feeds Derwent Reservoir, which in turn feeds Lady Bower Reservoir............ Hey what can I say, we drink a lot of water in Sheffield Grin

Derwent Reservoir is also known for Barns Wallaces bouncing bomb of WWII where 617 sqadron, also known as The Dam Busters, practiced their technique of low flying at night and tested the bouncing bomb. It was also the location where the film Dam Busters was filmed.

Derwent Reservoir was chosen for this exercise because of its similarity to the target Dams the bouncing bomb was designed to put out of action.

It is said that because the training over the Reservoir was kept secrete that the locals complained intensely about the noise at night in terms of the fact that it was worrying the sheep.

Please be assured that while I was at Derwent the sheep looked very calm without a care in the world.

Interesting to see this for its historical role. I saw the movie. I suggest you rotate the 2 dam photos slightly to make the dam wall level, as it would be in reality.
