Dance fly - Empis tessellata

By Ade_Osman
A small dark/brown empid or assassin fly most often seen between April-August visiting wildflowers for nectar such as Cow Parsley-Anthriscus sylvestris and Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna. They also catch other flies such as Aphids, Bugs, Flies, Mosquitoes and midges and these are sometimes carried in flight and then sucked dry using a long downward pointing beak (probicus). Fairly easy to spot despite being only about 10mm long because of their abdomen being strongly down curved.

A bit of a gruesome creature, but I always find critters like this have a beauty all of their own. Anyway hope you enjoy it, thanks for looking…….Ade
