Dance fly - Empis tessellata

By Ade_Osman
One from my archives today I'm afraid as I've not been out very much recently what with cameras breaking down and best friends being taken ill....

A small dark/brown empid or assassin fly most often seen between April-August visiting wildflowers for nectar such as Cow Parsley-Anthriscus sylvestris and Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna. They also catch other flies such as Aphids, Bugs, Flies, Mosquitoes and midges and these are sometimes carried in flight and then sucked dry using a long downward pointing beak (probicus). Fairly easy to spot despite being only about 10mm long because of their abdomen being strongly down curved.

Thanks for all the good wishes regarding my best mate and his recent Heart Attack, although he's a lot better than he was, he's had a lot of tests and such like and it now transpires that he needs a triple heart by-pass. It's really shook everyone up as you might imagine, especially him as he's only 53 years old! Still at least he's in the right place and they're hoping to operate fairly soon, they've assured him he'll feel like a different man afterwards. In the meantime, I'm still making lots of trips to the hospital, so bear with me if I don't seem to be making my usual amount of comments etc.

Best regards to everyone......Ade

Quality shot Ade. Great colour in the fly - it's a stunner. Great amount of detail retained in the white flowers too. A very contrasty situation and you've handled it perfectly!

Hope your friend makes a full and speedy recovery. It must be a tough time for everyone.

Agree with all the comments here. It's a great shot especially the way you've retained the whites as John says, and it gives us an insight into the life of this little dancer. I've just noticed how long its legs are and that beak. Amazing.
Hope your friend gets better soon and well done for being such a good mate to him.
