Danse Macabre

By WhiteRose1
My other outing last weekend was to an 'open gardens' day at Essendon Village in Hertfordshire (just NW of London).
Maybe not the first image you would imagine to see but the blacksmith's workshop was one of the 'open' gardens
and invited people to look around (and buy!). This skeleton (made of solid metal) was in the junk part of the yard
with various other pieces of 'art'.

The title refers to an artistic genre of a late-medieval allegory on the universality of death...... and also the theme tune to
Jonathan Creek GrinGrin

Iso400, 1/800sec, f4 (all manually set), no tripod this time.

Not quite what one might expect to find in a blacksmith's premises, Dave, so an unexpected find but one that makes for a great subject: and so well captured and presented by using the wide aperture, throwing the b/g OOF and allowing the eye to settle on the subject with no distractions.

Extraordinary, particularly as the sculpture (I assume it's not a real girl) in the background looks to be so full of vitality and fun. Mind, this is a very lively, talkative skull.
Danse macabre wall paintings are one of my odd passions. The best I know is in the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu, in the Auvergne. Death there is witty, sympathetic, teasing. See here .

Rather macabre - but not regretful???

Excellent shallow dof and mono.

Macabre indeed. Great contrast with the soft sculptural presence behind.

The scene made more macabre by the assortment of out of focus limbs just visible in the background.

Like the juxtaposition of the macabre in sharp focus against the OOF limbs.. Excellent different study in mono..

Clever image, clever title. It works well in mono and I thought it would work sepia toned too, but when I had a play with it I found that a blue duotone worked best. You haven't enabled mods so I can't post it to show you, but suffice to say there is a lot more potential to this fascinating image.

This is way ahead in the macabre stakes, and the blacksmith obviously only had a skeleton staff, but also the brains to produce something other than horseshoes, so he was no bonehead or numbskull and no lazybones either, but obviously got up to a bit of skullduggery.
