Dare To Duotone

By LynneJoyce
A post coordinated with with Ivor (Capto) because of our shared love of duotones, a technique sometimes maligned and dismissed as old fashioned. Described thus in Wikipedia -

"Duotone is a halftone reproduction of an image using the superimposition of one contrasting color halftone over another color halftone. This is most often used to bring out middle tones and highlights of an image. Traditionally the superimposed contrasting halftone color is black and the most commonly implemented colours are blue, yellow, brown, and red, however there are many varieties of color combinations used."

It is a relatively easy technique using the following guidelines in Photoshop -

Duotones

I often adapt the results of the PS process using hue/saturation to change the result to my particular taste and I never cease to be impressed at how different duotones can create completely different moods with the same starter image.

Anyway, here you have my contributions to this coordinated post. 12 of the images are my own, 3 are c/o the official photographer at the Lord Mayor's Ball when I decided to take 'Black Tie' on the invitation literally. (I think I was the most comfortable woman in attendance). My point here is to show that duotones can be successfully used with a variety of image styles.

Please view Ivor (Capto)'s post where you can see it expertly used on architectural and Dungeness images, thus demonstrating the breadth of imagery that is suitable for this technique.

Many thanks to Ivor for his cooperation.Thank you for viewing and I hope that you enjoy some of these images and that this plus Ivor's post inspire you to give duotones a try.

All are wonderful shots and processes. Really hard to pick out a favorite. I have tried duotone on a few of my shots and I'm not sure why I haven't done more. Something I will need to revisit in the future I think. Smile
