I've been playing with an old hard drive and macro. Various ideas, a few of which I'll test on you. This is available light, a tripod and an LED array added for extra light but included in frame? Trying to add some effect.

It was a single platen 250GB drive from a TV hard drive box.

Don't know where the Nikon bit came from! Was a Sigma, obviously.

The space probe returning to the mother ship? I just wanted a square crop to enhance the abstract quality. (You don't 'do' abstract but that's what this is! The lines are far more important than the scale...)

I reckon it would also be interesting to see this with the focus on the space ship not the probe. That's personal taste...

And everyone should 'Check out Nikon...' Obviously... Wink

No, Canon. Only joking, there's nothing to choose. I stayed with Canon because I already had EOS film cameras and in the early days of digital, Canon were rather in front of Nikon. Not so now.

I don't see this as abstract as I understand abstract. It is quite clear what the object is if you have seen the inside of a hard drive, but I do admit it is hardly a record, more an effect shot. So, I can subscribe to a bit of abstract, or less than realistic. It is the blurry mushy weird stuff I struggle with.

The original plan ws to shoot record but, by my standards, I got carried away. I was using the LED array as back light, but saw it reflected in the disc from one angle and thought it looked interesting.

Good heavens, Paul ... are you going arty on us?!!! Grin Grin Grin

As an image, I love it. It's abstract to me, though only for the fact that I've not personally seen the inside of a hard drive so haven't got the foggiest what one looks like. What I do see, however, is an incredibly interesting, well taken image.

The way that the light array underneath echo the circular holes in the metalic objects is lovely. Moira's crop does what I would have done, which is to effectively get rid of that small white line crossing the bottom left corner. Other than that minor point though, I think it's fantastic.

(And arty, but I know you won't accept that designation, so I'll say that it's an "excellent effect shot" Wink)

I capitulate! Never been accused of being arty before. I think I'm flattered. May be my ideas are changing as I get older!

Thanks, anyway. It does move away from my stock photography.

Moira's right about a square crop, I think, bringing the essentials together nicely.

What I want to see is more shine on that actuator arm (looked it up on Wikipedia...) in the foreground - I've done what I can with dodge and burn, but it merits a light on it to get some nice bright reflections, I'd say. The sheer size of the disc by comparison with it means it needs to be at least as bright.

The problem with lighting is that the disc has a clean mirror like finish. The arm is a very dull gry pressed steel. Totally different rflective surfaces.

I really like this one,Paul. Especially the 3D effect. As everyone else I had a play as well. MOD is uploded.
