During my trip to Washington last month, I spent some time taking some late night walks around the city. There are a lot fewer people out after 10:00PM and the monuments are still fully lighted offering some nice photo ops.
This is the Washington Monument looking across the reflecting pool from the base of the Lincoln Memorial.
Here are a few facts:
Hight: 555ft (162.28 meters)
Material: marble, granite, and sandstone
Architect: Robert Mills
Construction: The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect's death. This hiatus in construction was because of a lack of funds and the intervention of the American Civil War. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (45 m) up, clearly delineates the initial construction from its resumption in 1876. It was the tallest structure in the world, until the Eiffel Tower was completed in France.
