Was your camera set on auto exposure?? If so try overexposing it by perhaps 1 or 1.1/2 stops. This should make it a lot brighter.

Yep - it was a point and shoot moment on auto everything. (older camera) I just got a new canon rebel (two days ago) so I am hoping to get out and try some more snow shots with that camera this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion. Eveything here literally looks like a black and white picture.
