Deep Purple (1)

By steffilewis
On my 18th birthday I went to Knebworth to watch Deep Purple. I remember being at the front of the dense crowd watching the photographers in the photopit, thinking, "wow, what a great job".

Now 21 years later I got the opportunity to photograph them myself and I do consider it a major milestone in my career.

This is Steve Morse. He didn't play at Knebworth, Richie Blackmore did, but he certainly is a good replacement for him, and boy oh boy, did he rock out!

Good colour and nice angle to this one.

BIG MISTAKE!...............a lady giving away her age (it will be your weight next).

I hate to say it....but it was a few years before your Knebworth date that I saw them playing. There were probably only 1000 people there (old cinema in Edinbrugh - now gone) and my ears were ringing for days.

I first saw Deep Purple in 1972 at the ABC in Plymouth ( I was 17 ) on the Fireball tour and they were awesome, I was a huge Ritchie Blackmore fan ( I've got some old pics of him in Rainbow somewhere). I think that this is a great photo but Purple should have called it a day years ago!! I hope that they don't still play Smoke on the Water !!! All together now ( with air guitar of course and amps turned up to 11) -- DA DA DA, DA DA DA DA, DA DA DA , DA DA........Geoff

They did play Smoke on the Water, and Space Trucking (my favourite).

After we were kicked out of the photopit (stupid damn health & safety rules) my writer and I went and sat on the hill at the back of the bowl and enjoyed the rest of the set. She kept laughing at me as I sang along, telling me I was showing my age.

I didn't care! I'd just waited 21 years to shoot that band ... I was in photographer heaven!

Great day Smile

DING DONG STEVE MORSE - what a talent. Seen deep purple 3 times now just because of this man. Excellent capture.

He played with a band "kansas" aswell as doing some awesome solo work.

"When a blind man cries" & "Fools" & "Perfect Strangers" & "Sometimes I feel like screaming (STEVE RULES ON THIS TRACK LIVE)" - They are best tracks they produced

Well done

The lighting looked challenging here because you seem to have bright white lighting on the left, but amazingly the expousre is perfect!

A dream come true, something you deserve Smile

I'm still dreaming lol!

Keep them coming!

Cracking picture, cracking guitarist. Saw him on the Purpendicular tour where he stayed on the opposite side of the stage from Blackmore until "Highway Star" then crossed over and kicked ass on Rock's greatest guitar solo.
Sort of said "I'm not a Ritchie replacement, I'm my own man." Awesome banjo player!

I have never been a fan of Deep Purple, but as a music image I think this works really well.
