Deer Hunter (not allowed)

By kuipje
This picture was shot in Burgers Zoo, in Arnhem, in the east part of the Netherlands close to the German border. About 1 1/4 hrs drive from Reeuwijk. It's really a very nice zoo, not so many cages Smile
(accidentally shot in JPEG instead of RAW
Didn't remove the fence because I wanted to emphasize the title ... (not allowed)
As always advise/comments/mods/tips much appreciated

V2 is original

Title song "Deer Hunter" by The Shadows

Shooting up a hill has helped get a low angle on the same level as the animals. That is always good.
The main issue is the lighting. It's dappled, which is attractive, but the camera has been influenced by the dark areas.
You've addressed this well in your processing, but there is no detail at all in the very bright areas.
Your +1/3 compensation has not helped - it should have been -1/3 as you want to counter the influence of the dark areas so that you can maintain detail in the highlights. In fact I'd suggest -2/3 or even -1 stop. Even with RAW, there is a limit and some negative exposure compensation here would have made post processing easier.

I appreciate why you left the fence in. It's not a huge distraction, and ok for the location, and quite a lot of work (though not difficult) to remove it. The image would ultimately be the better, it depends if you have the time.

Thanks Keith for your (always) helpful comments
Yes I know, now, about the EC and look more carefully at this.
Time is not the problem today I try to remove the fence, I like to do that stuff. But first I have to take the deer to an other placeSad
Will post it when I'm done
