DH.88 Comet Racer "Grosvenor House"

By teocali
A full frame capture of the DH.88 Comet Racer "Grosvenor House" flying at Old Warden last October.

The Shuttleworth Collection’s de Havilland DH.88 Comet (G-ACSS) flying at the Shuttleworth Season Finale “Race Day" at Old Warden in October 2014 after almost 12 years, marking the return to flight of this much-missed classic racer.
Designed, built and flown by de Havilland in just nine months in 1934 exclusively to participate in the Sir MacPherson Robertson England to Australia air race, the Comet was a racing thoroughbred, powered to a maximum speed of 237mph by its two 6-cylinder de Havilland Gipsy engines. The Comet presents a striking profile: a slender 29ft wooden and spruce plywood fuselage conceals the aircraft’s main fuel tanks in the nose, and its smooth lines and graceful 44ft wingspan give it timeless art deco good looks.
The idea behind the ‘Race Day’ season finale airshow was to celebrate the golden years of ‘air racing’, most notably because October 2014 marks 80 years since the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race in which the Collection’s de Havilland DH.88 Comet claimed first place.
