Digger Wasp landing with Prey

By kiers_m
A Digger Wasp (Ectemnius Lituratis) returning the nest with a paralysed fly as food for its larvae.

While normally solitary wasps (as opposed to having a queen and workers) they are known to share a nest entrance with separate brood chambers within. That is the case in our garden, under the edge of our patio and this is one of a few who spent a few days hunting and gathering flies.

I noticed a pattern in their behaviour which might allow for a photograph and set up with my camera slung low to the ground. 1/2000sec froze the movement with the wings still blurred, f/10 gave about as much depth of field as I could manage without pushing the ISO too high (1250 for this image). I then used a large reflector to bounce sunlight into the shadows and improve the exposure. All in all, sessions over 3 days to get one crisp image, a handful of slightly-soft-but usable ones, and whole load of rejects!

You certainly deserved to get some good shots. This is excellent, especially holding its prey.
