Dop & Roos

By MartinVanners
My 5 year old son Dop had been best friends with Roos, a four-year-old girl, for most of his life. Growing up together living just a block apart, they were practically inseparable. When I was told that Roos would be moving to another village at the end of summer 2014, I decided to spend the time the children had left together photographing what I feel was an Ă‚‘uncomplicated, unconditional friendshipĂ‚’.

I continued to add to the photo series until the day Roos left, both to record the wonderful memories of their friendship, and also as a way for me to re-experience the joys of being young. Last year, the series has gone sort of viral, being published on several big websites across the globe. It even became frontpage news in a local newspaper in The Netherlands (the country where I live).

The image showing here was the first photo I took, which made me decide to start doing the series. It ended up being the final image of the series, since the symbolism of "Dop has to let go of his best friend" was really clear in this one.

Interested in seeing the complete series about "the last summer with a first love"? Here's where you can find it.

Martin I think I shall congratulate your parenthood skills first, devoting attention and time to your child and his friends. Photographically as a moment it is shot at the right time and it is executed correctly.
Very touching image, will check the series for sure!

As an image, without the explanatory write up above, it stands solidly on its own two feet. The quality of the photography, the mono conversion, the subjects and the composition.

However, with the write up it's elevated upwards by more notches than I care to think about! It's one of the most poignant, beautiful and visually stunning images of childhood I think I've seen in a long while.

If I wore one, I'd take my hat off to you ... but as I don't wear one, have an award instead Grin

Simply stunning, for all the right reasons.

It's true! A picture does say a 1000 words. But your added description multiplies the meaning even more. Wonderful
Thanks RobboB!
