A pair of dormice photographed during a recent survey at a site just outside Canterbury. It is an offence to disturb dormice without a licence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. This survey was properly licensed under the act. However, it can be difficult to work out what constitutes disturbance for dormice, as these two stayed asleep throughout the survey process, including being manhandled into a bag for weighing. The photo shows them at the end of the survey at the nearest point they got to waking up.

The "dor" in dormouse is the same as the French word dormir - to sleep. These two individuals certainly lived up to their name.

Thanks to my good friend Brett Lewis for laying this on.

Browsing your PF for photos of Zambia (going in Nov 2009) I found this delightful shot. I hold a licence for Dormice but haven't seen, let alone photographed, one for ages. My 'patch' is in Worcestershire.
