"Doulton Terracotta Fountain"

By RonnieAG
Today's images are from a visit yesterday to Glasgow Green, a large flat parkland on the northern bank of the R. Clyde.
The Fountain was designed to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887 and was first unveiled at the Empire Exhibition in Kelvingrove Park (Glasgow) in 1888. It is the largest terracotta fountain in the world and the best surviving example. It was moved to Glasgow Green in 1900 but after falling into disrepair it was renovated and moved to it's present position in the park in 2004.

V 1: The Fountain with the People's Palace behind.
V 2: Side view of the fountain with the old Templeton Carpet factory beyond (now a Business Centre)......a building modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice.
V 3: Detail of the South Africa representation.

My thanks to all who commented on my last posting, as ever so much appreciated.

Ronnie.

Three fine shots of this impressive edifice.

It is interesting how the position of the figures indicates the social values of the day, men in superior positions, women in inferior ones and with the South African one, the black woman with a breast exposed.

What a beautiful fountain - they don't build 'em like that any more. Nice to see the fountain as a whole, and also the closer views showing it's detail Smile
