Just crossed the old castle moat. Now I'm in the old town. If I would have walk here 300 years ago I would have seen the castle wall and entered through a city gate. In Golda (the name changed later in Gouda)
A bit of history of building the canals and walls. ( from the websiteof the archaeological society Golda )
"Walls, gates and towers wall
The perimeter of the ramparts of Gouda had a length of about three kilometers with four large gates and three additional ports to the waterfront. Between the gates of the wall was extended with advanced semicircular wall towers to defend from the side wall. On the inside of the wall were savings arches brick and topped by a parapet with shooting openings to defend the city. Such wall arches reminds the street name "Bogen". Later, the four major gates of the canal for a building flanking walls with two towers and the drawbridge came. How big investments were in town wall is evident from the huge amount required brick. Per meter wall 13,000 bricks were needed. Through urban taxes had to make contributions to this every citizen in kind or in cash."

The last image is my fave among these fine shots, Jos. There's so much to see under that lovely light. You need to watch out for the vertical lines, though.

That's true, but a lot of these old house are not straight, the bent over, are sunken the during the hundreds of years. I did my best to get it a bit even.
