Compositionally I like the narrow depth of field and the receding line of drums. I also love the spectators' faces in the background.

I think a few things let it down though, especially the chopped off drummer's head which is quite jarring. A wider POV would have been great - however maybe that wasn't possible at the time.

I personally don't see what benefit a mono version would have - it's a colourful pageant scene. In fact a very small boost in brightness, contrast and saturation would improve it (but being careful not to blow out the drumskins to pure white

In addition to the points made by Stephen, the white balance has made the shot yellow overall, so sorting that out helps as in the mod.

I can see why you like this, Tom.
I had a look at the mono version in your portfolio and don't think it works as well as the colour version. You need those red uniforms to make the image sing.
I like the way you have focused on the foreground drum, and it's good and sharp with nice highlights in the metal parts, but I'd like to have seen the whole of the top of it inside the frame, rather than a little bit chopped off.
I like the way you have focused on the drums as the main elements, and yet still have the atmosphere of a whole band, very clever.
Pamela.
