Dublin sunset

By Magneto
I was trying to highlight the contrast in form between the sweeping elegance of the bridge and the hard linear lines of the buildings, using the symmetry afforded by the reflection for emphasis. The sun was going down fast and the light was just lovely.

Welcome to EPZ Brian. This is also the critique gallery as you appear to know, where we try to provide feedback as best we can, sometimes illustrate what we say with a mod, and unlike the general gallery, you dont receive votes or awards.

Im sure this image of Samuel Beckett bridge would attract plenty of votes. This is fast becoming one of those iconic images, and in this version, looking back towards the city, youve managed to include Liberty Hall, the Four Courts, and that pointy thing in O'Connell street for good measure!

Its well composed and the overall image is very good. Looking at the exif data, I notice you used a picture style, or mode for Landscape. This tends to exaggerate green and blue, and might have been best not used, going for a neutral or faithful result, with a daylight white balance. I mention this as it may get you a warmer (even warmer!) result.

You were looking for an underexposed result, though this could still be less bright if you wanted.

Apart from being slightly warmer, I loaded a mod thats a little underexposed simply to get a deeper contrast and more solid colour. Its an alternate approach, not a better image, - all a matter of taste.

I must mention that this is the first image from the Coolpix A I've ever noticed on this site in the gallery. A nice camera too.

Regards

Willie

Thanks for the feedback Willie, much appreciated.
My local camera club is having the big summer exhibition next week and I am entering this. The theme is Landscape and sea and city scenes are allowed.
I had to turn the exposure comp down to avoid the sky being totally blown out, which made the buildings very dark. I had to do a good bit of work in Lightroom to bring in the foreground.

I like your edit, as you say its a different style. I think I will stick with the original for now though, although I will play around with the exposure at home later.

The Coolpix A is fabulous little camera, miles better than I had expected, I picked mine up on ebay for 230 a couple of months ago and couldn't be happier with it. The fixed lens really makes you think about your composition and I think this is making me a better photographer.

I will upload this to the regular gallery tomorrow,

Thanks again,

Brian.

Welcome from me too.

Willie has pretty much covered it.
I'd like to have seen the far left edge of the bridge in frame and those wires just reaching the ground. As you have most of the bridge in frame it would be oleasing to see it in its completness. Not sure how easy it would be to tweak it with a fixed lens and how much room you had to manoeuvre while avoiding falling in!
That's a small point and I'm sure it'll go down well in a local exhibition, just make sure you tweak the colour as in the mod.

And welcome from me, too.

As keith says, the left side of the bridge woudl add to the curve, and make things more complete. There's plenty on the right that you can do without.

I've cropepd pretty severely, so it is all about hte bridge, and darkened, to reduce it more to shape, not context.

Godo work: lovely sky!
