A sculpture by Ptolemy Elrington, exhibited in the Art In The Garden at Hilliers Gardens in 2019.
This Sussex artist got into making scrap art after finding lots of hubcaps and rubbish near his home.
He doesn’t mind people describing his work as rubbish.
It is.
He calls himself Uncle Bulgaria in a nod to his Womble-like salvaging instincts, and calls this art Hubcap Creatures.
Hubcap Creatures are made entirely from recycled and upcycled materials. All the hubcaps are found, usually on the side of the road, and therefore bear the scars of their previous lives in the form of scratches and abrasions. “I believe these marks add texture and history to the creatures they decorate. I rarely spray my work because I like the natural look.”
“Our attitude to the thrill of acquisition needs to change and we need to think of new ways of looking at a second or even third life for a product,” he says. “That way, the recycle can just become the cycle.”

I appreciate your interest and response to my previous sculpture shot.
